Liposuction: 8 myths you have definitely heard – and what is really behind them
Liposuction myths put to the test: we clear up misconceptions, facts and risks – and show what patients can really expect.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure for the targeted removal of fat deposits. At the same time, there are many myths about liposuction – from dramatic before-and-after promises to bizarre claims. Online you can find almost anything: facts, half-truths and misconceptions. But what is really true, and which stories are pure myth? In this article we clear up the most common misunderstandings about liposuction and show you which ideas you can safely forget – and which actually contain a grain of truth.
Myth 1: Liposuction is for losing weight
That is false. Even if this rumour persists more stubbornly than the most stubborn fat cells: liposuction is not a treatment for reducing body weight, but serves to remove fat deposits that remain despite a healthy diet and exercise. Typically, around 2–5 kilograms of fat are removed in liposuction. The aim is to contour specific areas of the body in a natural and harmonious way. Whatever the procedure: it does not replace a healthy lifestyle – this is essential for a long-lasting result. If the ideal weight for liposuction has not yet been reached, medically supervised nutritional therapy with Mounjaro beforehand may make sense.
Myth 2: The results are always visible immediately
It depends. Expecting dramatic changes straight after a treatment often leads to disappointment, because swelling and tissue changes distort the impression. Patience is therefore called for: with liposuction too, it takes several weeks to months before the final result becomes visible. The body needs time for the healing processes and for fluid retention to subside. Because compression garments and lymphatic drainage play a major part in supporting this process, we recommend them to all our patients.
Myth 3: Removed fat cells never come back
That is true – with limitations. Fat cells removed by liposuction do not grow back. However, the remaining fat cells can become larger if body weight increases. In addition, excess fat can be stored in other regions of the body. To keep your weight stable in the long term, it is crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
Myth 4: Liposuction is completely painless
That is false. Even though VASER® is gentle on tissue, it is a surgical procedure. After the operation, swelling, a feeling of tension and pain occur, which can usually be controlled well with medication. As with any surgical procedure, liposuction also carries risks such as infections, bruising or temporary altered sensation. Careful, close aftercare helps to make the healing process as comfortable and effective as possible.
Myth 5: Liposuction gets rid of cellulite
Only with the right method. Cellulite arises from a complex interplay of skin structure, connective tissue and fat distribution. Liposuction alone can therefore not remove cellulite completely, because the underlying problem is not only fat but the hardened bands of connective tissue. The good news: VASER®-Smooth technology offers a combination treatment of liposuction and targeted release of hardened connective tissue bands, and achieves very good and lasting results against cellulite.
Myth 6: Age plays a role in liposuction
Unsicher, welche Behandlung passt? Wir beraten dich persönlich.
That is true, but biological age matters more than chronological age. There is no fixed age limit for liposuction, but skin elasticity and general state of health are decisive for whether liposuction can be performed and is effective. In younger patients, the tissue usually retracts faster after the procedure. In older patients, a combination with techniques such as J-Plasma for skin tightening may make sense in order to achieve a natural and harmonious result.
Myth 7: Liposuction is only for people with a lot of money
That is false. Liposuction is a surgical procedure, but its cost depends on the extent and the technique. In most cases, the procedure also improves patients’ health and fitness, which increases their performance and reduces the risk of chronic illness – and the often considerably higher costs associated with it. Thanks to flexible financing options, liposuction is also accessible to a broader group of patients and is therefore no longer a luxury. An open conversation about goals and budget creates transparency and helps to find a solution.
Myth 8: Liposuction is only for women
That is false. More and more men are choosing liposuction, in particular on the abdomen and flanks and to correct gynaecomastia, colloquially also called “man boobs”, which affects 30% of adult men in Germany. With innovative VASER® liposuction, male body contours can also be defined in a targeted and natural way. Liposuction in men is no longer a rarity today and offers the possibility of reducing stubborn fat deposits that remain despite training.
Conclusion
Liposuction serves to contour specific areas of the body in a targeted way. The results only become apparent after a certain healing period and are lasting if weight remains stable. Whether a combination with techniques such as J-Plasma and/or Vaser®-Smooth makes sense is highly individual. What is clear: liposuction does not replace a healthy way of life, but complements a balanced diet and regular exercise. Under these conditions, it can contribute to a visible improvement of the body and thus also to greater well-being.
