Eyelid correction (blepharoplasty) can be carried out on both the upper and lower eyelid and is one of the most common aesthetic surgical procedures. How exactly do eye bags and changes to the lower eyelid develop?
Gradually, the skin around the lower eyelids becomes thinner, the muscles slacken and the connective tissue weakens. As a result, the underlying tissue structures of the lower eyelid and midface, the so-called fat pads, often also begin to sink downwards under gravity.

Pronounced eye bags can have various causes and often do not arise from a single factor. Besides individual predisposition, natural changes in the skin, fluid balance and external influences also play an important role. Often several factors play a role at the same time.
The lower eyelid surgery itself is then carried out lying down under general anaesthetic or twilight sedation and takes approx. 60–90 minutes. The excess fatty tissue and excess skin are removed. The muscle can also be tightened by fixing it laterally to the bone of the eye socket.
The fat can also be repositioned to fill a sunken tear trough. In some cases, a canthopexy or canthoplasty is also necessary. This stabilises the outer corner of the eye and fixes it anew to the canthal tendon, so that the lid is tighter and does not sink again.
In the first few days after the procedure, however, wound pain, swelling, bruising and redness can occur here too. These reactions are completely normal, can be treated with common painkillers and usually subside within a few days to weeks.
Especially during this time, it is advisable to cool the treated areas regularly and to sleep with your upper body slightly raised. This supports lymphatic flow, and swelling generally subsides more quickly.
As with all surgical procedures, you should avoid sport for a few weeks and avoid direct sunlight.
