Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure in which excess skin, sagging tissue and, where necessary, excess fat are removed from the upper and/or lower eyelids. The aim is a fresher, more youthful look without changing your natural facial expression.
Before the procedure, there is a thorough examination, medical history and photo documentation to define your individual treatment plan. On the day of treatment, a local anaesthetic is given; on request, twilight sedation or general anaesthetic can also be used. The procedure usually takes between one and two hours, depending on whether only the upper eyelids, only the lower eyelids or both areas are treated.
Immediately after the procedure, swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal and can be reduced by regular cooling and keeping the upper body slightly raised. Within about one to two weeks, these side effects subside noticeably. The stitches are removed after around seven to ten days. After about ten to fourteen days, social activities are usually possible again. The final result becomes visible once all swelling has gone down, which is usually the case after a few months.
