Breast reduction: less discomfort, more ease
Breasts that are too large or too small are, of course, a subjective perception. The decision for a breast reduction is therefore a very personal one and must always be seen in the context of your natural proportions.
Above all, where a large breast volume has been a burden since youth, volume has been added after pregnancy or breastfeeding, or the breast has sagged over time, a breast reduction can make a noticeable difference in daily life for many patients. They gain more freedom of movement, take strain off their body and often speak of a generally lighter and more positive sense of their body.
What does breast reduction mean?
Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, aims to reduce the volume of the breasts by removing excess glandular, fatty and connective tissue.
Where possible, sensation in the nipple is preserved. With a very large breast (gigantomastia), however, a free nipple transfer may in rare cases be necessary. We will of course inform you about this in detail in the personal consultation.

Day of surgery
The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic and can take between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the extent of the reduction and individual circumstances.
Recovery period & aftercare
After a breast reduction and/or lift, a recovery period of approx. 2 to 4 weeks is required. In the first days after surgery, pain, swelling and bruising may occur, but these subside over time. A special support bra or compression garment must also be worn for several weeks. This supports the breasts and promotes healing.

This procedure is often carried out on women who suffer from restricted movement, discomfort, bra straps that cut in heavily, a frequently inflamed inframammary fold, and other physical complaints such as back and neck pain or postural problems caused by very large breasts.
But women who want to change the shape and size of their breasts for aesthetic reasons also choose this surgery. This may be the case, for example, after pregnancy or significant weight loss.
In many cases breast reduction and lift are combined, both to reduce the volume of the breasts and to firm and raise the breast shape. This not only relieves the functional problems of an overly large or sagging breast but also achieves an aesthetic breast shape.
Both procedures can be carried out independently or in combination, depending on the patient’s individual needs and wishes.
To prepare for the procedure, blood-thinning painkillers (e.g. aspirin) and cigarettes should be avoided for about 14 days before surgery. Both can have a negative effect on wound healing and circulation.
The surgeon removes the excess tissue and, in the case of a breast lift, tightens the remaining breast skin at the same time to achieve a firmer, younger and more harmonious shape.
The incisions are usually placed around the nipple, along the inframammary fold and possibly vertically from the nipple downwards.
The final shape of the breasts only becomes visible after a few months, once all the swelling has subsided.
As a rule, however, patients can resume light everyday activities after about 1 to 2 weeks, while more intense physical exertion and sporting activity should be avoided for about 4 to 6 weeks.

In principle, breastfeeding is possible after a breast reduction. However, as glandular tissue is also reduced during the procedure, the ability to breastfeed may be limited in individual cases. An individual consultation on this before surgery is important.
The amount of tissue removed varies depending on the individual findings. Often several hundred grams up to several kilograms are removed.
