A tummy tuck, medically known as abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and sagging tissue from the abdomen and tightens the abdominal wall anew. Depending on the findings, separated abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis) are brought back together and fat deposits on the flanks and waist are removed by liposuction.
The procedure makes sense when the skin has been stretched considerably after pregnancy or significant weight loss and no longer retracts, up to an apron of fat. Tightening the abdominal wall after pregnancy or weight loss
After pregnancy or major weight loss, the abdominal area often changes permanently. The skin was stretched for a long time and also loses elasticity over the years. The straight abdominal muscles often separate as well. This rectus diastasis leads to a visible, sometimes dome-like bulge, and many people feel that their core is no longer stable.
A tummy tuck is an option once your weight is stable and exercise and diet no longer bring further improvement. Depending on the findings, there are three methods with different incision patterns.

Which tummy tuck suits which findings?
Classic abdominoplasty
For pronounced excess skin and tissue in the lower and middle abdomen. Curved incision along the bikini line, the belly button is repositioned.
Anchor technique (fleur-de-lis)
When the upper abdomen also shows excess. The horizontal incision is supplemented by a vertical one in the midline.
Mini abdominoplasty
For slight excess limited to the lower abdomen. Considerably shorter incision, smaller scar, the belly button usually stays where it is.

Which method is right is decided by the findings in the consultation. With a pronounced apron of fat, an extended resection may be necessary.
Methods in detail
The three incision patterns
For pronounced excess skin and tissue in the lower and middle abdomen, a curved incision is made above the pubic hairline from hip bone to hip bone, usually within the bikini line. The belly button is cut around so that the excess skin can be removed, and is reinserted at its new position. The scar is longer than with the other methods, in places over 50 cm, but usually heals well and becomes inconspicuous over time. With a pronounced apron of fat, an extended resection may be necessary.
If there is also a clear excess of soft tissue in the upper abdomen, a horizontal incision is not enough. The lower incision is combined with a vertical incision in the midline. This allows excess tissue to be removed horizontally and vertically, and above all the upper abdomen to be contoured.
For slight, locally limited excess in the lower abdomen, the small tummy tuck is sufficient. The incision lies in the same place as with the classic method, but is considerably shorter, and the scar correspondingly smaller. The belly button is usually not moved.

How a tummy tuck works at Innerform
Consultation and preparation
In the consultation, we decide on the method and incision pattern and discuss risks and preparation. About 2 to 4 weeks before surgery, no blood-thinning medication and no nicotine. After previous abdominal surgery, an ultrasound examination may be useful to rule out hernias. We plan the scar position so that underwear or a bikini covers it, so bring the underwear you wear most often to the preparation appointment.
Surgery
Under general anaesthetic, 2 to 4 hours depending on the findings and technique. Excess skin and tissue are removed, the abdominal wall is repositioned and sutured with strong stitches, and the belly button is repositioned if needed. On request, combined with liposuction or tightening of the straight abdominal muscles.
Recovery and aftercare
Allow 2 to 4 weeks of recovery without physical strain; our surgeons will give you precise instructions. Stitches do not need to be removed. The final result shows after 6 to 12 months, once the skin has adapted and the scars have faded.
Anaesthesia and clinic
General anaesthetic, inpatient with 1 to 2 overnight stays.
Recovery
Downtime 2 to 4 weeks. Light movement after about 2 weeks, abdominal muscle training after 6 to 8 weeks at the earliest.
Scar
Horizontal in the lower abdomen, planned so that underwear or a bikini covers it.
Result
Final result after 6 to 12 months, permanent with stable weight.

With liposuction and abdominal muscle tightening
A tummy tuck can be combined with two further steps in the same operation. Liposuction on the flanks and waist creates smoother transitions. And tightening of the straight abdominal muscles closes a rectus diastasis, which is often present after pregnancies or major weight loss. We plan both into the consultation.

For women and men with excess skin and tissue on the abdomen, often after major weight loss or pregnancy, when the skin no longer retracts on its own. A stable weight is a prerequisite.
Like any surgery, a tummy tuck carries risks: wound healing problems, infections, scarring, fluid collections (seromas) and temporary sensory disturbances in the abdomen. We discuss them in detail in the consultation.
Scar healing is individual. Special care products and, if desired, laser treatments can support the process. We advise on this during aftercare.
For minor findings, less invasive methods may be an option, such as liposuction or non-surgical skin tightening with Renuvion or Thermage. The examination clarifies whether that is sufficient.
