A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, focuses on tightening and raising the breast tissue without significantly changing the volume.
Excess skin is removed and the breast tissue repositioned to lift the breasts and refine their shape. A breast lift can be performed on its own or in combination with a breast reduction or augmentation.
When is a breast lift an option?
Women often choose this method:
- when the nipple no longer sits “high”
- for sagging or “empty” breasts after pregnancy or breastfeeding
- when tissue is weakening (also genetically determined)
- after major weight loss

A breast lift can be combined with a classic breast augmentation. An implant (Motiva® or Mentor) is inserted to improve volume and shape. Excess skin is then removed, the tissue tightened, the nipple moved to a higher position and the remaining skin shaped into a natural, firm breast.
Breast lift combined with augmentation using your own fat (lipofilling)
For patients who want a natural breast augmentation with simultaneous lifting.
Implants are not the right choice for every patient. Many want a natural option without foreign material and therefore choose the option with a fat transfer. First, fatty tissue is gently harvested by liposuction, then prepared and placed into the breast, before the surrounding skin is given its final shape as part of the breast lift.
Breast lift combined with a breast reduction
For patients with larger breast volume who want harmonious proportions
Besides a breast augmentation, in some cases a breast reduction combined with a lift is also an option. This may be the case, for example, if very large breast volume has been present since puberty or after a pregnancy. Symptoms such as back, neck or shoulder pain are not uncommon here.
In a reduction, tissue is therefore removed first, before the breast is lifted and reshaped.
Breast lift combined with implants & your own fat (hybrid breast augmentation)
For patients who want more volume, natural contours and a particularly balanced result
Hybrid breast augmentation works with implants and your own fat. The implant provides the base volume and shape, while your own fat creates very soft, natural transitions and contours. Smaller refinements can also be made, especially if a breast lift follows. In this way, several cup sizes can often be achieved without the result looking unnatural.

The day of surgery
The breast lift is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes about 2 to 3 hours. Unlike a breast reduction, no or only very little breast volume is removed. Instead, the excess skin and connective tissue are reduced, the existing glandular tissue is reshaped and the nipple is brought to a higher, more natural position to achieve a youthful and harmonious breast shape.

Important: A breast lift can also be an option for men who suffer from pronounced gynaecomastia or sagging breast tissue due to a hormonal imbalance, weight gain or the natural ageing process.
The incisions usually run around the nipple and vertically downwards or along the inframammary fold, depending on the extent of the lift and the desired results.
In addition, a so-called “inner bra” technique can be used, in which an internal support is formed from your own tissue. This stabilises the breast in the long term, and it does not sink again (as quickly) even with weaker connective tissue.
As after other surgical procedures, you should take it easy physically in the first weeks. Swelling, bruising and mild pain may occur temporarily. Increased sensitivity of the nipples, temporary firmness and visible scars are also possible. These usually subside during healing within a few months. To stabilise the new breast shape, a specially fitted support bra is also worn for approx. 3 months.
Everyday life can often be managed well again after a short time. Sport, however, should not be done for the time being until the treating doctor gives the okay, as otherwise the result may differ from what was intended. The final breast shape shows after about 6 months.
During this time, regular follow-up checks take place, of course, so that everything heals as expected. You can also clarify any questions that arise at any time.
Important: Directly after the lift, the breast can look almost too full. After about 3 months, however, there is an initial settling as part of healing. For this reason, the result should only be assessed after about 6 months. It usually remains stable for several years, depending on skin and tissue quality and the patient's lifestyle.

The final result of a breast lift is usually visible approx. 6 months after the procedure.
As the nipple and the milk ducts to the mammary gland are generally not damaged during a breast lift, breastfeeding is still possible afterwards. However, particularly after extensive lifts, the glandular tissue and subcutaneous tissue may also develop internal scarring and adhesions, which can limit the ability to breastfeed.
In principle, the result is permanent. However, skin and tissue continue to age as you get older, so a further lift may become necessary.
