Which method is right depends on how pronounced the hooded eyelids are and what is causing them.
Surgical upper eyelid surgery
For inherited or pronounced hooded eyelids and when vision is impaired. The most pronounced and longest-lasting result.

Minimally invasive for less pronounced hooded eyelids. Fine pulses of light stimulate collagen and tighten slightly.
With Thermage

Methods in detail
How the three techniques work
For genetically inherited hooded eyelids, or when slackened skin and tissue impair vision, surgery is usually the right choice. It delivers the most pronounced and longest-lasting results. The surgeon removes excess skin and, where needed, slackened muscle portions and protruding fat deposits. The incision lies in the natural eyelid crease, so the scar is barely visible later. Under local anaesthetic, with twilight sedation or general anaesthetic if you wish, taking about 45 to 60 minutes.
Laser treatment with Fraxel is a minimally invasive method using fine pulses of light. Thermal stimulation and controlled micro-injuries stimulate collagen production and improve skin structure: finer skin texture, fewer wrinkles, slight tightening. Thermage is non-invasive and works with radiofrequency that specifically warms deeper layers of skin. This stimulates collagen formation and tightens the tissue, so the eyelid area looks firmer and smoother. No downtime. More about the method on the Thermage page.
Causes
Why hooded eyelids develop
With age, skin and tissue lose firmness because collagen production declines. Muscle strength around the eyelids can also decrease. On the upper eyelid this shows as excess skin or a sagging of the eyelid area, and the gaze looks tired or heavy-lidded. On the lower eyelids, eye bags or fat accumulations develop, which in some cases even restrict vision. Besides age, genetic factors, intense sun and smoking promote the slackening.

Consultation and examination
A detailed examination, medical history and photo documentation for the treatment plan. We also clarify the cause: if the brows have dropped, a brow lift may make more sense than upper eyelid surgery alone. For simple excess skin on the upper eyelid or eye bags on the lower eyelid, tightening the respective eyelid is the better choice, whether surgical, minimally invasive or non-invasive.
Treatment
Local anaesthetic, with twilight sedation or general anaesthetic if you wish. The procedure takes 45 to 60 minutes, and up to two hours for upper and lower eyelids together.
Healing and aftercare
Swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal; cooling and keeping the upper body slightly raised help. After one to two weeks they have subsided noticeably. Stitches are removed after seven to ten days, and after ten to fourteen days social activities are usually possible again. The final result becomes visible after a few months.

Upper eyelid surgery: details to read
As with any surgical procedure, swelling, bruising, temporary dryness or irritation of the eyes can occur. Asymmetries or more noticeable scarring are possible but rare. We discuss all risks in the consultation, and the aftercare instructions help keep them low.
The surgery takes place under anaesthetic, and you feel no pain during the procedure. Afterwards, mild swelling or a feeling of tightness can occur, which respond well to cooling and pain medication.
