Breast reductions and breast lifts are two surgical procedures that are often combined to achieve an aesthetic breast shape and alleviate the functional problems of oversized or sagging breasts. Both procedures can be performed independently or in combination, depending on the patient's individual needs and wishes.

Breast reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, aims to reduce the volume of the breasts by removing excess glandular, fatty and connective tissue. This procedure is often performed on women who suffer from physical complaints such as back and neck pain, skin irritation or postural problems due to very large breasts. Women who want to change the shape and size of their breasts for aesthetic reasons also opt for this operation.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can take between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the extent of the reduction and the individual circumstances. The surgeon removes excess tissue and simultaneously tightens the remaining breast skin to achieve a firmer, younger and more harmonious shape. Incisions are usually made around the nipple, along the underbust crease and possibly vertically from the nipple downwards to remove the excess skin and tighten the tissue.

Breast lift

Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, focuses on tightening and lifting the breast tissue without significantly changing the volume. Women often opt for this method after pregnancy, weight loss or as they age. It involves removing excess skin and repositioning the breast tissue to lift and refine the shape of the breasts. A breast lift can be performed alone or in combination with a breast reduction or augmentation.

The breast lift is also performed under general anesthesia and usually takes 2 to 3 hours. During this procedure, the tissue is lifted to achieve a natural, youthful shape. The incisions are usually made around the nipple and vertically downwards or along the underbust crease, depending on the extent of the lift and the desired results.

Combination of breast reduction and breast lift

In many cases, breast reduction and lift are combined to reduce the volume of the breasts as well as to tighten and lift the breast shape. This combination makes it possible to achieve the desired aesthetic result and at the same time alleviate functional complaints such as neck and back pain.

Recovery time and aftercare

After a breast reduction or lift, a recovery period of around 2 to 4 weeks is required. Pain, swelling and bruising may occur in the first few days after the operation, but these will subside over time. A special support bra or compression garment must be worn for several weeks to support the breasts and promote healing.

As a rule, patients can resume light everyday activities after around 1 to 2 weeks, while more intensive physical exertion and sporting activities should be avoided for around 4 to 6 weeks. The final shape of the breasts only becomes visible after a few months when all swelling has subsided.

Scarring

As incisions are made along the nipple, vertically and/or under the breast crease during breast reduction and lift surgery, scars are usually unavoidable. However, these scars are usually well hidden and fade over time. Modern techniques minimize the extent of scars, and the choice of incision techniques depends on the individual case.

It is important to consider scar care during the healing process to optimize healing and minimize the visibility of scars. Regular check-ups with the surgeon ensure that healing is progressing properly and that any complications can be detected at an early stage.

Risks and side effects

Possible side effects include scarring, changes in sensitivity or temporary asymmetry. Good aftercare reduces the risk of unwanted complications.
