Many women feel that their natural breasts are too small, asymmetrical or sagging and would like a fuller cleavage. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that aims to improve the size and shape of the breasts in order to achieve a harmonious and aesthetic appearance.
Breast augmentation can be performed using either implants or the patient's own fat. Both procedures have their own advantages and disadvantages, which are taken into account depending on the patient's individual needs and wishes.
Breast augmentation with implants
Breast augmentation with implants is the most common method and is preferred by many women worldwide. In this procedure, silicone or saline implants are inserted into the breast to increase the volume and improve the shape of the breasts. The surgeon decides whether to place the implant under the mammary gland or under the pectoral muscle, depending on the patient's anatomy and the desired results.
Silicone implants: These implants offer a particularly natural feel and a realistic look. They are available in different shapes and sizes so that they can be customized to the patient's individual needs. Most modern silicone implants are filled with a special gel that provides a comfortable, soft feel and matches the natural breast tissue requirements.
Saline implants: These implants consist of a silicone-coated shell filled with sterile saline solution. Saline implants offer a safe option because in the event of a leak, the body absorbs the fluid. However, the feel of these implants can be slightly firmer and less natural than silicone implants.
The size and shape of the implant is chosen based on the desired breast size, body shape and the patient's aesthetic goals. The surgical procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes between 1 and 2 hours. Healing after breast augmentation can take around 2 to 4 weeks, and a special compression garment should be worn for the first few weeks to stabilize the implants and support healing.
Breast augmentation with implants requires a recovery period of around 2 to 4 weeks. Slight pain, swelling and bruising may occur in the first few days after the operation. However, these symptoms usually subside quickly. Strenuous physical activity and lifting heavy objects should be avoided for the first few weeks after the operation.
Breast augmentation with autologous fat
Breast augmentation with autologous fat, also known as fat transfer, is a less invasive method in which fat is harvested from another part of the body and injected into the breasts. This procedure is often preferred by women who do not want implants and would like to benefit from liposuction at the same time. Common fat removal sites are the abdomen, thighs or hips.
The process comprises several steps:
- Fat removal: The excess fat is removed from the desired areas of the body using liposuction. This is usually done through small, inconspicuous incisions.
- Fat processing: The fat removed is cleaned and processed before it is injected into the breasts.
- Fat injection: The prepared fat is injected into the breast tissue in small amounts to model the shape and increase the volume.
The advantage of breast augmentation with autologous fat lies in the natural texture of the tissue, which results in a softer and more authentic appearance. In addition, no foreign materials such as implants are required, which eliminates the risk of rejection or capsule formation. However, it is important to note that not all injected fat is permanently retained - usually some of the fat is absorbed by the body. Therefore, a follow-up treatment may be necessary to stabilize the desired result.
The recovery time for breast augmentation with autologous fat is often shorter than with the implant method, as the procedure is less invasive. However, liposuction must also be considered a separate process with this method, which involves additional recovery time for the fat removal. It is important to take care of the treated areas during healing and to have regular follow-up visits with the surgeon to monitor the progress of the healing process.
Scarring
Both procedures usually leave small scars, but these are placed in such a way that they are as inconspicuous as possible. In breast augmentation with implants, incisions can be made either along the underbust crease, around the nipple or in the armpit. With the autologous fat method, the scars from liposuction are minimal and in most cases inconspicuous, as only small incisions are required.
Proper care and aftercare are crucial for rapid healing and an aesthetic end result. Once healing is complete, the scars are often barely visible and the final result is visible after several months when the swelling has completely subsided. After the operation, patients should wear a special support bra for a few weeks to stabilize the new breast shape and minimize swelling. Sports activities should be avoided for about six weeks.

Which implants are used?
High-quality silicone implants with different shapes (round or teardrop-shaped) and surfaces (smooth or textured). The choice depends on individual wishes and anatomical conditions.
How long do breast implants last?
Modern implants are long-lasting, but must be replaced after around 10-20 years, depending on individual factors. Regular medical check-ups are important.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Possible risks are
- Swelling, bruising and temporary sensory disturbances
- With implants: Capsular fibrosis or slippage of the implant
- With autologous fat: partial fat loss or formation of small cysts
Which incision techniques do you use for implants?
At Innerform we normally use one of the following cutting techniques:
- Underbust fold (inframammary): Most common method, as the scar is well hidden
- Nipple margin (periareolar): More suitable for smaller implants
Is breastfeeding still possible after breast augmentation?
Yes, in most cases the ability to breastfeed is retained, as the glands remain intact.
